Unfortunately, and undeserved, Koh Tao is known as Death Island for many British tourists coming to Thailand. The island has been avoided for some people following misleading information of some tabloids trying to damage the reputation of this paradise place. Why? Indeed, there are no easy answers to these questions, but we want you to know all the truth about safety on the island.
Is Koh Tao Dangerous?
No, of course, is not. When people come to South East Asia, they expect to find yummy food, great people, culture, breathtaking beaches, but also safety. Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world, and so it’s Koh Tao. In many European countries, there are many stories about European citizens getting in trouble in Siam, most of the times due to drug issues.
However, everyone thinking about coming to Koh Tao must know that this island is 100% safe. It’s small in size -only 21km 2- makes it a cozy place where everybody knows each other. You can leave your mobile on the table of the restaurant and come back 2 hours later that most probably the mobile will be in the same place, and the same happens with your motorbikes keys.
Every year, many backpackers decide to visit the island for diving or partying, so many young women come alone to the island. Why? Simply because it’s a safe place. No woman or man should feel in danger in Koh Tao, basically because they will feel safe from the moment they set foot on it. All the articles they might have read in the past trying to damage the island will vanish once you know the place.
So Why is Koh Tao Called the Death Island?
Everything started with the murder of a British couple in 2014 in Sairee Beach. The couple were going back to their hotel late at night when everything happened. After that, many articles were talking about the safety in Koh Tao, especially in British tabloids. However, Koh Tao continues being one of the top destinations for British tourist.
After this happened, every sad event or incident on Koh Tao is treated as “death island” for the tabloids and yellow press. There are some unwanted incidents on the island, as it happens in all touristic places, but nothing out of the ordinary, taking in consideration the number of visitors coming to the Turtle Island every year.
How Safe is Koh Tao?
So for people wondering how safe is Koh Tao, we must answer that safer than most parts of Europe or America. Thailand is a completely safe country for tourists; this is why it’s a major destination for Europeans, American or Aussies. But among Thailand, Koh Tao is a completely safe island, with almost no crime.
As everywhere in the world, you have to take care of your belongings, but you can leave your mobile unattended and relax on the beach that no one would take it. After many years of living and enjoying this island, we can affirm that this is one of the safest places we’ve ever been to. Despite the parties and alcohol, things rarely go out of control. Of course, we have to be responsible and behave ourselves with respect towards locals and other tourists, but this is exactly the same in all the parts of the world.
